Dubbed swamp metal by some, Black Tusk fashioned their sound in the Savannah scene, easily set next to Kylesa and Baroness… but with the three vocalist attack, felt more aggressive and unchained than their counterparts. Dirty, nasty and loud, Black Tusk whittled their sound into a fine tuned style that set them apart, compact three minute jams that were in your face the whole time and stood on the edge of insanity with every riff. With their latest EP Tend No Wounds, they depart from a more formulaic song writing pattern they had developed over their four full length albums and went for a somewhat softened approach, almost southern rock inspired at points.
Groovy tempos and generic rhythms, a little out of left field for a band who had honed in on their territory. As an EPthough, one can allow a bit of leniency, a short burst of expression from an already established act. Honestly with the amount they tour, it is impressive they stopped long enough to record anything, let alone five pretty decent songs. Unfortunately Tend No Wounds falls flat in an already crowded field of sludgy metal.
