DAVID LEE ROTH Takes Credit For The Solos, The Lyrics Even The Name VAN HALEN

What?!?

van halen

David Lee Roth is from a previous era, and I have nothing but love for one of the best frontmen in rock history. But after seeing some quotes from his recent interview with Missouri radio station KSHE 95, I have to wonder what has he been smoking (and can I get some?)

When asked if he has permission from his bandmates to play songs off their legendary debut album, Roth

“No. I wrote the songs. I wrote every word you heard, every syllable, every melody. I structured out even the guitar solos on that first album.

“Why do you think the solos [later] changed so radically? I sang the solos for ‘Jamie’s Cryin” and ‘Runnin With the Devil’… I structured those songs. I designed the backgrounds on the stage. I came up with the album covers. I thought of the stripes on the guitar. I’m the one who said, ‘Call it Van Halen.’”

I'm sorry, what!?

Okay, I can obviously buy that Roth wrote all the lyrics. I could maybe even understand how he made suggestions for the structure of the solos. But where he loses me is when he starts taking credit for the guitar stripes.

Either way, Roth is keeping plenty busy with a ton of dates in Vegas in 2020. Get tickets here.

You can hear this interview below and I highly recommend listening to Roth on WTF with Marc Maron.
