I am lucky to be alive. I might be overdramatizing a bit but last night there was a scary situation here at South by Southwest.
Last night at around 8:40pm, I tried to get into the venue Mohawks, where the House of Vans shows were being curated, to see Les Claypool's Duo De Twang and Chino Moreno's Crosses. Just as my friend and I were approaching the door, the venue was filled to capacity and we were told to form a line in the middle of the street to get it. They weren't letting anybody in. An hour later, we were still not in so I gave up and started cursing the venue and how disorganized they were.
Had it been a few hours later, I might've been dead or in critical condition right now.
At around midnight, a drunk driver was fleeing a DUI checkpoint and crashed into people on line for Mohawks, killing a couple on a moped before plowing through the crowd injuring 23, with five of whom in critical condition. He hit a cab and then tried to escape, but a cop stunned him with a stun gun and he was apprehended.
No names have been released yet as the families of those injured are being contacted first. It was a scary scene heading back to my hotel, with half of one of the major roads blocked off for investigation. SXSW is supposed to be about fun, but some people cannot be trusted to act responsibly. Please don't drink and drive.
Here is a graphic video report (I couldn't bare to get through the whole thing):
