DREAM THEATER Is Plotting Studio Time For A New Album

Sounds like 2024 might be the year.

Now that Dream Theater has wrapped up their inaugural Dreamsonic tour, they're taking some time off before hitting the studio later this year.

In an interview with Killer Guitar Rigs, Dream Theater guitarist John Petrucci said the band hopes to begin writing and recording either later this year or early 2024. The new material will be Dream Theater's follow-up to their 2019 album A View From The Top Of The World, whose song "The Alien" won a GRAMMY for Best Metal Performance in 2022. It was also Dream Theater's first album to use 8-string guitars, so here's hoping there's more of that.

"Right now we're on the Dreamsonic tour, which is our own traveling prog metal festival with Animals As Leaders and Devin Townsend," said Petrucci as transcribed by Metal Injection. "We have about nine or ten more shows left across Canada and the US and that'll be it for Dream Theater as far as touring for 2023. We'll take some time off and we'll get into the studio soon. So I'm imagining if not by the end of the year, by the beginning of the next year we'll start working on new music."

And if you're reading this article wondering where to start getting into Dream Theater, good news! Vocalist James LaBrie recently talked about exactly that. Spoiler – his pick is "Metropolis – Part 1" form Images & Words.
