Weekly Injection

THE WEEKLY INJECTION: New Releases From DEVILDRIVER, GORGUTS, KVELERTAK, and More Out Today – 5/13

A Rather eclectic week for all y'all metal nerds. This week includes some Norwegian craziness, positive-affirmation-core, lots of atmosphere, and more! To the metals…

Destruction – Under Attack 816bQCnkC9L._SL1500_

Genre: Thrash
Origin: Weil am Rhein, Germany
Label: Nuclear Blast

Buy now on Amazon.com

This long-running thrash band has returned with their first record in four years. This album doesn't really bring any surprises, but your melodic guitar solos, shrieking vocals, and grounded rhythm section are all back. It's hard to be upset since this formula has worked so well for them thus far.

DevilDriver – Trust No One 91-UMuV0c5L._SL1500_

Genre: Groove metal
Origin: Santa Barbara, California
Label: Napalm

Buy now on Amazon.com

With Dez back in Coal Chamber, I half expected this record to feel phoned in. I'm not the biggest DevilDriver fan, but I've got to admit that this is probably the best record they're dropped in a while. The band is really getting the hang of this whole melodic death metal thing.

Gorguts – Pleiades' Dust EP 61P0kPUBKML

Genre: Avant-garde Death Metal
Origin: Richmond, Canada
Label: Season Of Mist

Buy now on Amazon.com

If you dug the Gorguts comeback album Colored Sands, you'll love this. It is one thirty-two minute song, so it requires a commitment. Pleiades' Dust is worth the commitment though. Luc Lemay is a genius and I'm still enjoying the influences that the Dysrhythmia guys brought to the band.

Grand Magus – Sword Songs 91p0Kb2+sFL._SL1500_

Genre: Heavy metal/Doom
Origin: Stockholm, Sweden
Label: Nuclear Blast

Buy now on Amazon.com

Do you need music to battle to? Is folk metal too silly for you? Is power metal just a bit too majestic? Then Grand Magus is your band you fierce warrior, you! Sharpen your blades and get the band's eighth record spinning to guide you.

Hatebreed – The Concrete Confessional 91yRFHvz9jL._SL1425_

Genre: Hardcore
Origin: New Haven, Connecticut
Label: Nuclear Blast

Buy now on Amazon.com

Hatebreed is another band that doesn't do it for me, but I really appreciate what they're going for. Jamey Jasta and the gang are one of the bigger heavy bands out and they're discussing police brutality and political corruption while also pushing self-positive thinking. It's easy to get bogged down in all the bad shit, and having a reminder that maybe you don't suck is nice. The band is twenty-two years and seven albums in, and it's hard not to respect this band for doing what they do for so long.

Kvelertak – Nattesferd 813M+lCW57L._SL1200_

Genre: Heavy metal
Origin: Rogaland, Norway
Label: Roadrunner

Buy now on Amazon.com

Nattesferd has Kvelertak really pulling out the dad rock anthem influence here. They're combining that with modern heavy chaos and I am loving it. There is a weirdness that was missing from Meir, and I'm happy to be hearing it again.

Nothing – Tired Of Tomorrow 91BdDJQk0CL._SL1500_

Genre: Shoegaze
Origin: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Label: Relapse

Buy now on Amazon.com

I seem to be including at least one metal-adjacent band with each Weekly Injection these days, and here is this week's. If you don't already know Nothing then A) you are not Jon Snow (See what I did there?) and B) you're missing out. They are a fuzzy indie band that brings the heavy while being pretty moody. They've got some old Radiohead vibe to them, as well as some Deftones atmosphere. A very successful sophomore album from these guys. Way to avoid the slump fellas!

Sylvaine – WistfulSOM385-Sylvaine-1500X1500px-300dpi-RGB-compressed

Genre: Atmospheric black metal
Origin: Oslo, Norway /Paris, France
Label: Season Of Mist

Buy now on Amazon.com

Still looking to fill the void of Alcest (mostly) dropping black metal from their sound created? Look no further than Sylvaine. Actually, this reminds me a lot of Neige's short-lived Amesoeurs project, which I loved. This is the one-woman post rock/blackened-ish metal's second album, and it is pretty tremendous.
