This week's new heavy metal releases include epic prog, doom folk, and more! Check out select new releases here on vinyl via Gimme Metal. Now to the metals…
Also! This Saturday is also Record Store Day! Peep that list here.
Atavistia – Cosmic Warfare
Genre: Symphonic/progressive black metal
Origin: Vancouver, British Columbia
Label: Self-released
Buy now on Bandcamp
There's a lot of epic stuff this week, but this might be the biggest sounding album I'm going to highlight. The symphonics are in full effect here as Atavistia mixes Cradle of Filth and Thy Catafalque black metal with bombast. You're also getting occasional breaks for folksy moments, digital boops, and choirs.
Dorthia Cottrell – Death Folk Country
Genre: Death folk/country
Origin: Richmond, Virginia
Label: Relapse
Buy now on Bandcamp
Windhand's vocalist Dorthia Cottrell is no stranger to haunting darkness in her music. As usual, Death Folk Country is dark, but there is an element of country thrown in. It winds up sounding like the perfect soundtrack for an even cemetery stroll, with just a lil bit of twang.
Dawn Of Ouroboros – Velvet Incandescence
Genre: Progressive post-black/death metal
Origin: Oakland, California
Label: Prosthetic
Buy now on Bandcamp
Do you like melodic death metal? Atmospheric black metal? Hella melodic guitar-work? Varied songwriting? Dynamic vocals? Regardless of any of your answers, you should check out Velvet Incandescence. Shit's rad.
Enter Shikari – A Kiss For The Whole World
Genre: Post-hardcore/metalcore
Origin: St Albans, England
Label: SO/Ambush Reality
Buy now on Amazon
If you like you kinda-sorta metalcore full of melodic and electronics, then Enter Shikari is probably already on your radar. This one is super catchy, pretty proggy, and all over the place in terms of influence.
Grave Pleasures – Plagueboys
Genre: Post-punk
Origin: Helsinki, Finland
Label: Century Media
Buy now on Amazon
It is now to dance like a sad goth! Plagueboys is a tribute to 80's gloom and still manages to be a lot of fun. So if you're a fan of Depeche Mode or The Jesus and Mary Chain, but want a little more rock grit, this is the one for you.
Liv Kristine – River Of Diamonds
Genre: Symphonic rock/metal
Origin: Stavanger, Norway
Label: Metalville
Buy now on Amazon
River of Diamonds is straight up gothic rock and metal by one of the queens of the genre. Moments have a Cure vibe to them as well, which is pretty cool. You're also getting a pair of unique covers on this as she does her own version of Jon Lord's "Pictured Within" and Cyndi Lauper's "True Colors."
Portrayal Of Guilt – Devil Music
Genre: Experimental black metal/orchestral
Origin: Austin, Texas
Label: Run For Cover Records
Buy now on Bandcamp
The ever shape shifting Portrayal of Guilt have shifted shapes once again! The first half of Devil Music is your experimental heaviness while on the second half you'll find those same songs done in an orchestral way. Side-b can be head in the video below and it's a while trip.
The Smashing Pumpkins – ATUM: A Rock Opera in Three Acts: Act 3
Genre: Alternative/hard rock
Origin: Chicago, Illinois
Label: Martha’s Music
Stream/pre-save here or buy the physical via Gimme Metal
In 1995 The Smashing Pumpkins unleashed the undeniable classic record Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness. In 2000 they dropped the sequel album Machina/The Machines of God (which then also had its own sorta sequel album of b-sides). Now they are releasing the sequel to those in Atum: A Rock Opera in Three Acts and this is act three. Act One dropped in November and Two was released earlier this year. Enjoy the final batch of eleven songs.
