Weekly Injection

THE WEEKLY INJECTION: New Releases From FATES WARNING, ORACLES, WOLF HOFFMANN and More Out Today – 7/1

This edition gets classy with some classical metal, progressive mainstays, and other ramblings of an incredibly sleepy blogger. To the metals…

Chelsea Grin – Self Inflicted 71HSqy0bftL._SL1500_

Genre: Deathcore
Origin: Salt Lake City, Utah
Label: Rise

Lil deathcore by numbers on this one with low-tuned chugging, big ol' drops, and those breakdowns that make the younglings karate kick around a pit. If that's your jam, this shan't disappoint. How apparent is it that I have nothing to say about this one, and don't really want to say anything about it?

Fates Warning – Theories Of Flight 8157qWT6VgL._SL1500_

Genre: Progressive
Origin: Hartford, Connecticut
Label: Inside Out

With over thirty years under their belt, Fates Warning know what they're doing and fans know what they're in for. A listener knows that they're about to get a collection of soaring, wanky, complex tracks, and Theories Of Flight probably won't surprise you. However, the material stands up next to older shit. Also, there is a version with a bonus disc that features some pretty interesting covers of Toad the Wet Sprocket, Uriah Heep, and other acoustic stuff that sounds interesting.

Grave Desecrator – Dust To Lust 61zjiJGHgcL

Genre: Death metal
Origin: Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Label: Season Of Mist

This one is for everyone that says I don't talk about "real metal." This record has some sweet, sweet blackened death metal jams complete with lo-fi production and spooky cover art. It's been a long six years since their last record, so you'll be stoked to have these scary Brazilians in your life again.

Oracles – Miserycorde 13233054_2140084846130809_815951646770554650_n

Genre: Extreme metal
Origin: Kortrijk, Belgium
Label: Deadlight Entertainment

This band is pretty cool, and the fact that they're a little difficult to label is part of why they're cool to me. There is certainly a melodic death metal side to them, then they toss in some thrash, goth metal, and prog. Probably worth a listen if you're a fan of their members' other projects Aborted, System Divide, and Onoma.

Pain Of Salvation – Remedy Lane Re:visited (Re:mixced & Re:lived) 813jkakEQpL._SL1500_

Genre: Progressive
Origin: Eskilstuna, Sweden
Label: Inside Out

Loyal readers may notice that I don't heck around with re-releases, compilations, or the likes for the most part. Unless it is a release of previously unreleased material, why should I? Fans that will be interested in the re-release at all probably already have the album. So, I'd usually rather not bother with a cash grab record. ANYWAY, I also don't really have much to be excited about this week. So here is Pain of Salvation's 2002 record Remedy Lane performed live in full and with some remixed tracks. Probably worth it for the live stuff.

Wolf Hoffmann – Headbangers Symphony 91xKvXXTlKL._SL1500_

Genre: Classical metal
Origin: Mainz, Germany
Label: Nuclear Blast

Buy now on Amazon.com

Ending this week on something bombastic and fun. Wolf Hoffmann is a guitarist in Accept, but on the side he's into making classical music heavy. His 1997 record, appropriately titled Classical, was more straight forward covers of known pieces. This one adapts existing songs to whatever the fuck Wolf feels like doing with them, and includes some original compositions. It is my pick of this week for sure. Check out the attached song and listen for the bits of Symphony No. 9 in there.
