This week's new heavy metal releases include live riffage, prog sludge, crushing heaviness, and more! To the metals…
The Gorge – Mechanical Fiction
Genre: Progressive metal
Origin: St. Louis, Missouri
Label: Pelagic
Buy now on Bandcamp
Starting this week off with some heavy prog. These fellas bring the sludge mixed with swirling lead lines. Exactly the type of band you'd expect from Pelagic records. Would recommend for fans of East Of The Wall, Mastodon, and the next band in this post.
Mutoid Man – Mutants
Genre: Progressive metal/hard rock
Origin: Brooklyn, New York
Label: Self-released
Buy now on Bandcamp
It's been six years since these weirdos have brought their truly unique spin on progressive metal. They have a shiny new bassist in Jeff Matz, but retain all their killer riffs and eclectic energy. Some fun videos from this one too. Including one directed by the Two Minutes To Late Night folks.
Nuclear Power Trio – Wet Ass Plutonium
Genre: Shred/progressive metal
Origin: "International"
Label: Metal Blade
Buy now on Bandcamp
After the world-wide success of their debut EP, Kimmy, Donny, and Vladi P have rejoined political and metal forces for another shreddy album that's fun start to finish. You're getting some of the catchiest leads I've heard in a long time, incredible bass work, and wild rhythms throughout a record that dips toes into 80's synth pop, classic shred rock, and prog of all sorts. Special shout outs to Greg Burgess (Allegaeon), Nick Schendzielos (Cephalic Carnage), and Pete Webber (Havok) for now reason in particular.
Sevendust – Truth Killer
Genre: Groove/nu metal
Origin: Atlanta, Georgia
Label: Napalm
Buy now on Bandcamp
Stretch your neck because it's time for some grooves. These guys are still so good at this sound. I realize that I even gave them a nu metal nod, but they truly are one of the timeless bands of their genre and this album sounds both fresh and classic. Also, as I'm sure I said last time, Lajon Witherspoon is one of the greatest voices in metal. Chad's review is here.
Sign Of The Swarm – Amongst The Low & Empty
Genre: Deathcore
Origin: Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
Label: Century Media
Buy now on Amazon
I can hear the keyboard smashes already that there hasn't been anything "heavy" this week. Well, here you go. This has some occasional boops and beeps, but this is low, chunky guitars and devastatingly heavy deathcore grooves.
Uncle Acid & The Deadbeats – Slaughter On First Avenue
Genre: Psychedelic rock
Origin: Cambridge, England
Label: Rise Above
Buy now on Amazon
I've heard really good things about Uncle Acid live, but haven't taken the plunge myself just yet. This album could very well change that. This is a combination of two live sets from 2019 and 2022 record at the First Avenue in Minneapolis (like from Purple Rain!) and it's spooky riff city.
