PANTERA To Reissue Reinventing The Steel with New Cover, New Mix by Terry Date

pantera

It's been 20 years since Pantera released their swan song, Reinventing the Steel. Where the hell does the time go? Rhino Records is celebrating the anniversary by offering a new reissue of the album, with a new remastering by legendary producer Terry Date, some alternate mixes and a new cover.

There will be a 3-CD version of the album that comes out October 30th, and then the 2-LP vinyl edition will be available early next year (likely delayed due to the pandemic).

Most interestingly, the band originally produced the album themselves, with the help of Sterling Winfield engineering, and mastering by Howie Weinberg. But for this reissue, Rhino has enlisted the legendary Terry Date to remaster the album. Date worked with the band on their previous four smash hits, The Great Southern TrendkillFar Beyond DrivenVulgar Display of Power and Cowboys From Hell.

Three of the Date mixes have surfaced on streaming services. Do you notice the difference in sound?

Also let's compare the covers. Here is the classic cover, featuring some dude in his boxers jumping through fire:

And now, here's the new, more reserved cover, which comes off like an homage to Dimebag Darrell's diamond plate guitar designs.
