Welcome to Writer's Bloc, the brand new series on Metal Injection where artists pick their favorite song from their brand new record and talk a little about it! For this installment, we've got Civerous bassist Drew Horton and vocalist Lord Foul talking about their new record Maze Envy due out March 22. You can also check out the entirety of the Writer's Bloc series here.
What Is your favorite song from Maze Envy?
Horton: "'Geryon (The Plummet)'. It's nearly 10 minutes long and CRUSHING. Perfectly encapsulates everything we want from the band when it comes to death-doom as a genre and the ending leaves you with the smallest amount of hope that you can escape from the maze.
Foul: "'Labyrinth Charm feat. Derek Rydquist'. Derek was a huge inspiration for Lord Foul, especially during his time in The Faceless. They developed a friendship later in life so getting the opportunity to have him feature on the track was a no brainer, and his vocals match the song so well you'd think he was in the band the entire time.
Why wasn't it a single?
Horton: "It's not the single because we felt 'Shrouded' and 'Labyrinth' were great starting points for people that hadn't heard us before and it's great to keep 'Geryon' in the pocket for listeners to find when they get to hear the whole thing."
Foul: "We put 'Labyrinth Charm' as our first single to show everyone how insane the new record would be and make sure they prepare themselves."
