Mayor-elect Bill de Blasio will be sworn in as the Mayor of New York City come January 1, 2014, which is a pretty big deal considering this is NYC's first new mayor in twelve years. So let's get into politics and discuss the pros and cons of stop and frisk, yeah? Maybe the loss of the Commissioner of the New York City Police Department (NYPD) Ray Kelly? Hell no! The most important thing about the guy being mayor is that his kids love metal.
De Blasio's daughter Chiara de Blasio was recently interviewed by Teen Vogue, which I religiously read regardless of my life's circumstances, where she expressed her love of metal:
"Old school metal, thrash metal, death metal, the new wave of British heavy metal. In terms of more modern stuff, I’ve gotten into Scandinavian, folk, and Viking metal. [De Blasio's son] Dante loves metal now too, thanks to me.”
When I got through the first sentence I was like, "ya rite u poser ur probly only liek megadeath," but then she started dropping words like "Scandinavian" and "Viking" and "and." So she knows her stuff and I approve.
Seriously, it's cool that she openly expresses her love of extreme music and that both of the kids are into it. Who knows what's next for metal in the mainstream now? Deafheaven made some monster splashes in pretty non-metal publications with Sunbather, the de Blasio kids are jamming on the heavies, there's a metal society dedicated to the education of the genre in academia… is metal finally becoming less of a swear word in the media and more of an accepted art form? More importantly, can I mosh with the de Blasio kids at a show?
