Deftones' 1997 album Around The Fur features a woman looking at something out of frame despite the fact that she's the main focus of the album cover. Her name is Lisa Hughes, and 20 years after the album came out, Pousta tracked her down and interviewed her a little bit about the album cover. Hughes says she's still into Deftones, still goes to shows, and has "a kickass job in the medical field."
Pousta also provides a picture of Hughes now, which we've put beside the album cover for reference.
Hughes says she feels "really lucky" to be included on the album cover, and tells the story of how the whole thing came out.
Well funny thing, I didn’t have a computer at the time and I received a call from Stephen (Carpenter) asking if I would allow them to use the photo for the cover. I wanted to see it first, but had a hard time getting a good copy, so I had Maverick Records fax it to me. It was a little dark and hard to see. But I said yes for sure use it. I didn’t have doubts, I was excited!
She also addresses the rumors that she and the photographer hated each other during the shoot, saying "none of that shit is true." The interview is short but it's a pretty cool read regardless, especially considering I never really gave too much thought about the people who appear on album covers prior to this!
If you haven't seen it yet, Deftones recently released a mini-documentary on Around The Fur.
