The sequel to the much-loved mockumentary This Is Spinal Tap may very well see the light of day in 2025.
According to director Rob Reiner in an interview with Deadline: "It's going good. Our first screening for our family and friends will be probably in August, and then sometime in September we'll start showing it to distributors, and we're hoping to have it out sometime late spring or early summer of next year."
This Is Spinal Tap's sequel not only features the original movie's director Rob Reiner, but will also bring back Christopher Guest, Michael McKean and Harry Shearer in their iconic roles as Nigel Tufnel, David St Hubbins and Derek Smalls. And yes – Reiner will once again play documentarian Martin "Marty" DiBergi. This Is Spinal Tap's sequel is also rumored to feature Lars Ulrich of Metallica fame and Chad Smith from Red Hot Chili Peppers in cameo roles.
According to Reiner in a previous interview with Variety, Marty himself (well, Reiner pretending to be Marty) is "thrilled" to be back on the road with the band, taking a break from his prestigious (or perhaps not-so-prestigious) teaching gig at the Ed Wood School of Cinematic Arts.
"I recently spoke to Marty DiBergi who said that he was more than happy to take a sabbatical from his position as a visiting Professor's Assistant at the Ed Wood School of Cinematic Arts to once again document Spinal Tap to ensure their place in the pantheon of Rock and Roll," said Reiner.
The plot, penned by the original cast and director, revolves around a disgruntled Spinal Tap reunited for one final show as the result of a shady contractual obligation. The band is also apparently not too thrilled with DiBergi either, for his depiction of the band on their last, ill-fated, and epic American tour.
