It seems like only yesterday it was 2008 and I was walking up and down my high school blasting A Different Breed Of Killer’s first album, I, Colossus, in between classes. I figured they were a one-and-done type deal since their first album was only okay, yet lo’ and behold eight years later ADBOK are back from the dead with a new album, The City, dropping in August and a new track called “The Devouring Storm.”
Unfortunately for ADBOK, it might have just been better if they had stayed six feet under. “The Devouring Storm” opens up with a sound clip and rolls into an intro riff with some keyboard over it. Unlike a Born of Osiris song where the keyboard gels with the rest of the track, this one plows through it with all the grace of an ice cream truck on its third Xanax. There are enough uninspired breakdowns to feed a family of six, and to top it off there is a laughable attempt at hardcore vocals that sounds more like a constipated Johnny Plague than anything.
We’re told that The City was recorded in 5.1 surround sound but even that can’t save “The Devouring Storm.” Let’s hope the record itself is better because this track is a fucking mess. At least the album artwork is cool. You can listen to "The Devouring Storm" on ADBOK's SoundCloud below:
