Brooklyn's black metal chameleons, Castevet, have just finished recording their follow up to 2010's Mounds of Ash. The album, titled Obsian, sees the light of day October 15th via Canada's Profound Lore Records, and the label has been kind enough to grace fans with a new track from the album called "As Fathomed By Beggars and Victims."
The new track is recognizably a Castevet song, but it's even more adventurous than anything from Mounds of Ash. There's still a chaotic dissonance to the music, but it's much more math-y and tight than the previous album. Nicholas McMaster, the bassist for fellow NYC avant-garde black metallers Krallice, assumes bass duties here and he brings a bouncy-but-still-insanely-heavy feel to the song. It seriously sounds like his bass is strung with steel cable. And there's an acoustic guitar that's prominently featured on the track, too. It's not an intro or interlude either, there's acoustic thrashing here.
I really dig this track. I was already a Castevet fan, but "As Fathomed By Beggars and Victims" has me excited for the new material. It's almost like Goreguts-lite. But don't take my word for it; stream the song below and let me know what you think in the comments.
