Decibel's Clips of the Month

Decibel Clips of the Month, December 2014: At the Gates, Abysmal Dawn, Carcass & Classic Clip from Mastodon

Every month, Decibel scribe Shane Mehling reviews the four videos that appear in the monthly metal mag. under “Decibel’s Clips of the Month at Metal Injection.” This month, watch picks from At the Gates, Abysmal Dawn, Carcass and a classic clip from Mastodon.

At the Gates – “Death and the Labyrinth”

This about 30 percent a desert, 20 percent some grinding gears and 50 percent Tomas Lindberg screaming while wearing a trucker hat. Now, Tomas can wear whatever he wants, but when he’s pretty much all you have to feast your eyes on that aren’t gears or sand, it’s a bit weird and distracting, right? But here is YouTube commenter Antony Jones with 46 upvotes: “He’s in a metal band, I’m sure fashion trends are something far down in his list of priorities. Obviously you care about it a bit more than most people here.” Fair enough, Antony. Fair enough.

Abysmal Dawn – “Inanimate”

Well, if there’s one band that doesn’t care about fashion, it’s Abysmal Dawn, because there is a single sleeveless shirt to share between the quartet. Clearly not much happened in the At the Gates video, but I’m feeling better about this one, even though so far it’s mostly the band playing in a real dark, foggy room. There’s a dude who broke out of some chains and a girl next to a piano, but they’re not doing much. They’re kind of shaking around and real itchy. Oh, and everyone’s covered in dirt. And they exploded. Um, let’s move on…

Carcass – “The Granulating Dark Satanic Mills”

Okay, Carcass, let’s see how it’s done. A cool little animation and, hell yeah, some shit about Mount St. Helens. Time for some destructi… oh, going to them live. All right. No problem. Just a little set up. A long set up. We’ll be getting back to the volcano any moment. Hmmm… it’s still them live, but now 6-0-2-6-9-6-1 is being shown on the screen. We’re almost halfway through the video, guys, so maybe if you could—seriously, just back to the sequence again? Carcass’s last video was them getting their fucking limbs chopped off, not helping me remember my routing number. Now it’s over and I got one final hope…

CLASSIC CLIP: Mastodon – “March of the Fire Ants”

Good, right away we got a guy with a bag on his head. Maybe he’s gonna get tortured… or maybe he’s gonna take the bag off his head and sit there for a while. There’s the band playing—and more of the guy sitting. Band. Sitting. Band. Sitting. Look! It’s a hole in the wall! Oh my god, there’s a guy with goggles shouting! He’s tied to a rope and he’s crazy! Better watch out! Hmmm… the guy doesn’t seem to really notice him or be bothered at all. And back to the band. Oh, people are just digging now? They dug up the guy with the bag on his head. And yet, this is still the best shit I’ve seen this month.
