It’s Monday and Mondays suck, so let’s grind it out with a full album stream of Atrocity Exhibit’s Extinction Solution.
Atrocity Exhibit is a band that’s been around for a bit. Since 2006, the Northampton, UK trio has been grinding out grooves. Though their output hasn’t been extravagant, and their line-up has gone through a few changes (with guitarist/vocalist James Caygill being the only original member), their quality has been consistent. Good old grindcore done with a splash of death metal.
Extinction Solution is only the band’s third LP in their twelve-year existence; nineteen tracks in twenty-two-grind-you-into-dust-minutes. As the album opens, we get “…As You Mean to Go On”, a short piece of ambience that sets the tone for the record. A brief piece that mediates on happiness and misery. And then we get “Hatred Disease”, an apt title to really get the ball rolling. It takes no time for the group to get grinding and ramp up the intensity. It’s like I said earlier: good old groovy grind with that splash of death metal.
Where Atrocity Exhibit shine is how they keep the energy from song to song without losing momentum. I’ve said it in the past and I’ll say it again: it’s easy for blasting bands to become boring or atonal because they rely too much on that punch. Atrocity Exhibit can seamlessly jump between punkier, circle pit sections, fat grinding blasts, and death metal groove. Tracks like “Carrion Banquet” are delicious slabs of deathgrind that have a taste for blood. Meanwhile, “Faustian Crisis Loan” jumps between an old school hardcore/punk sound, complete with gang vocals, and a grindcore ethic.
If you’ve got a taste for bands like Human Cull, The Kill or Wormrot, Extinction Solution is an album you’ll ease right into. No frills, chaos incarnate grind. That’s what it is, and that’s all we need. So, hit play on that stream and get grinding through this Monday.
