It’s Monday and Mondays suck, so let’s grind it out with the full album premiere of MouthBreather’s I’m Sorry Mr. Salesman.
I hope you are ready to have a boulder dropped on you because the new MouthBreather record is a doozy. If you are unfamiliar with the Boston, MA four-piece, they are a hardcore/mathcore/grindcore band that is writing some heavy, moshy, disjointed fighting anthems. Their previous releases Dollmeat and Pig showcased some wild, chaotic energy in the vein of Ground, SeeYouSpaceCowboy, and Great American Ghost. Their latest I’m Sorry Mr. Salesman takes their sound a step further and builds on the heaviness they have had down since day one.
The first thing that’s notable about MouthBreather is the hardcore side of their sound is very Boston. A good rounding of punk with some metallic edge that makes you wanna stage dive and throw a few fists. See opening track: “Wasted Life.” A track that tells you exactly what this band is about: crushing drums, and riffs, breakdowns, math, and grind with hardcore vocals. It is chaos unleashed on the listener and it only gets better from here.
Following is the mighty “Cotton Shot”, a song you might have heard before this, and one of the album’s best tracks. It’s a catchy, mean mathy/grind track that can get lodged in the head for days. The band throughout is never committed to one of its styles. Things are always mingling, but the glue that holds this all together is the hardcore approach. However, the math and grind are always lurking and ready to strike. Something that MouthBreather uses to their advantage.
MouthBreather’s sound has rounded out a lot with this release. Tracks are longer but still just as punchy. There are also melodic and ambient sections that add a heavier mood to the overall effect. “Deems” is a melodic, somber track that breaks up the album and gives pause for mediation. It isn’t quiet and has moments of static, feedback, and plenty of effects peppered around the rhythm. It is something that serves to unnerve. The final track, “I’m Sorry Mr. Salesman”, is something different as well. Sometimes ambient, sometimes thundering with drums, it is like someone’s mind unraveling before you.
It is a shame that touring is still off for the most part when it comes to this record because MouthBreather could tear up some venues. Good things will have to wait but luckily you don’t have to wait to hear the new record. If this is your introduction to MouthBreather, welcome. Buy all their records because they rule. For those of you that have been waiting for this moment. Now is the time to get grinding on this beast and get crushed.
