It’s Monday and Mondays suck, so let’s grind it out with a new single from Rat Punch titled “Time Off.”
Readers of the column might remember Rat Punch from two months ago when they unleashed It’s A Drink. The Knoxville, TN party grinders have a discography dating back to 2014 of mostly singles and demos. And it looks like the party train is not about to stop now as the band is keeping the hits rolling with a debut track from an upcoming EP titled Off Time Ain't A Crime to be released in 2022.
“Time Off” fades in over some dive bombs and little double bass. The track sets itself up nicely and spikes the listener with some danceability. It sounds like something that would get some bodies moving at a show as the opener track. The band remains jazzy and punky. The song carries itself with an old school hardcore feel but has a mathcore/jazz bounce. There is a lot of choppiness, especially as the track closes out and it is prime mosh and stage dive material. And at this point, the track sounds more like some mid to late 2000s mathcore/hardcore one might find out there. Last time I wrote about Rat Punch I compared them to older The Number 12 Looks Like You material and Sawtooth Grin. That still stands.
It is a taste of things to come, and those things are coming quick. Rat Punch is showing no signs of slowing down and good on that. More parties, more grind, more jazz, more mosh. The music is raw, aggressive, and ridiculously fun. If this is your first foray into Rat Punch make sure to check out their previous releases. Get jazzed up for Off Time Ain't A Crime and get grinding on this!
