It's Monday and Mondays suck, so let's grind it out with Gets Worse Snubbed.
Powerviolence. Sludgy, blasty, punked-out grinding madness. It's hard to get enough of it. Hell, sometimes it feels like an addiction. If that's not what you're into then this Monday edition is already out the window for you. Into it? Alright, then you're in for a treat.
Leeds, U.K. powerviolence predators Gets Worse have been getting better and better, more and more intense with every release. The four-piece has been grinding out powerviolence brutality since 2011. They've done splits with great bands like Endless Swarm, Henry Fonda and Fissure. Three other bands you should know. But on Snubbed, their latest, the band really cranks up the carnage.
At twenty tracks, Snubbed is Gets Worse longest offering to date. And according to Discogs their first full length. And to think this band has been cranking crusher after crusher for almost ten years now; that's nuts. Time flies, y'know? Too bad Mondays don't always go as quickly. However, Snubbed is the band's most accomplished work to date. Tracks feel more rounded than ever and the delivery has never been more satisfying.
Snubbed kicks things off with "Empty Tank", declaring that the past is gone and the future is not yet here. A few thick, sludgy slams later and the record is chugging like a locomotive. Check it at a few snare cracks, and the track is that pure powerviolence glory we've come to know and love. Sections of crushing breakdowns and grinding speed-ups. It's always glorious.
Where Snubbed succeeds so well is how tracks just flow seemlessly. Twenty tracks can seem like a lot, but anyone who is seasoned in grind and powerviolence knows that bands can make short work of a count that high. And while Gets Worse have plenty of songs that clock in under a minute, nothing feels squandered or lacking. Rather, the band is constantly pulling from their creative pool of juicy Spazz-like song structures and steamrolling their listeners in the process. Tracks like "Crushed" (adequately named) slam on and never let the breaks up. Fast or slow, the band is killing it.
Snubbed is a seriously brutal release. It's got blasts, breakdowns, brutality and humor to spare. If you've somehow missed the Gets Worse train, there's no better time to climb on than now and dive into this and their back catelog. Like I said, Gets Worse only get better and better the more they put out. Hopefully we'll see more output from them soon. Until then, get grinding on this.
