It's Monday and Mondays suck, so lets grind it out with WVRM's Colony Collapse.
As a preface I hope everyone is healthy and safe. These times we're in are insane on every front and seeing people meltdown from every walk of life is rough to put it mildly. But we gotta weather the storm. Hopefully a dose of grindcore will give some of you a distraction from the chaos and isolation. Maybe it won't, but hopefully you'll hear some music that gets your head banging.
The WVRM guys Greensville, SC got a bone to pick. Churning out some of the most furious grind since their inception in 2013, WVRM has been hard at work with their latest Colony Collapse. Though you should know them from other releases like Heartache, Can You Hear The Wind Howl? and Where All Light Dies. The band's mix of grind and sludgy breakdowns has made them one of the hardest blasters in the genre, and Colony Collapse continues this tradition.
A little feedback, the sound of swarming and before we know it we're in the blast radius. WVRM isn't about to let up right now. In an era where everyone should be at their most furious, WVRM bring the noise. "Walled Slum City" opens the record with jackhammering intensity. The track is as grind as grind gets. Getting punky with its approach but never shy with its blasts. Though once that breakdown hits its almost like the crowd killers come to roost.
Colony Collapse isn't a traditional grind record. Those of you that know WVRM, know they're not a traditional grind band though. In an era that plays to old school notions, WVRM embrace old and new and inspire more of a comparison to bands like Ground or Terminal Nation. The latter especially with WVRM's left-leaning politics. And as a band in SC, that kind of mentality has to be especially enraged in the rust belt. And maybe that's one more reason why this album is so damn pissed and enjoyable.
When tracks like "Black Flags Toward Sodom (Me Ne Frego)" hit, the album becomes even more monstrous. The delivery is pure rage and intensity. "My Fucking Dixie (The New South)" takes a sludgier approach but sounds like its peeling back pure layers of filth and throwing fists in every which way, while still blasting the hell out of us. "Violet Nuclear" has a similar effect, sounding violent as hell underneath the feedback and blasting drums.
Colony Collapse is another killer installment in the WVRM catalog. Those that love old grind have plenty of blasts to get into, and those that like something with a lot of mosh will get into this too. If you're on the left polticially, the lyrics will be more fuel to your fire. If you're not, this is still a killer slice of grind that bulldozes all in its path. Get grinding on this.
