The fusion of death metal's buzzsaw riffs with doom metal's glacial plod often yields murky, tormented results. Brugge native, Robin Van Oyen has been crafting crippling death doom as Gateway since 2014. The Belgian, one-man onslaught is releasing his second full-length album, Scriptures of Grief, on cassette February 3 through Sentient Ruin Laboratories. Metal Injection is excited to present a premiere of a section of this full-length album today.
While Scriptures of Grief is intended as a singular 30-minute album, it has been broken up into three separate parts. "II" is an ominous endeavor. Over eight minutes, it slowly trudges into the oozing, festering circumstance of a rotting death. Van Oyen's voice is laced with a hate so caustic it would burn skin from the viscera. Blood congeals in vessels, muscles seize with rigor mortis, and by song's end, Gateway's riffs have buried a listener in a shallow grave.
