Today we focus in on Nails of Imposition, a terrifying technical brutal death metal act from Perth, Australia. The band mainly reminds me of Wormed overall, with some Origin style hyper shredding and a flurry of other brutal influences swirling amidst the madness. They’ve been active since 2007 though I’m new to the group after recently hearing their album Surpassing Carbon Decay which came out on August 15th through Lord Of The Sick Recordings.
On Surpassing Carbon Decay, Nails of Imposition embark upon a hyper-blast focused warzone furthered by unhinged brutality spliced in for an extra adrenaline rush, together the opposing sides of their sound swarm in unison to create a frenzied insanity that overwhelms the mind. This is super fucked up and warped sounding material, yet Nails of Imposition have superior riffs, killer lead playing, and densely layered cascading songwriting on their side that keeps you interested through frequent shifts on a dime found a dozen or so times per most of the songs.
In line with what I said above, they're musically akin to Wormed most of all, furthered by traces of Cryptopsy and Origin, drawing strength from an unusual marriage between memorable warped frantic riffing and skull splintering brutality similar to acts such as Deeds Of Flesh, Suffocation, and Defeated Sanity. The unpredictable rollercoaster-esque ever-shifting cycling through endless ideas keeps things fresh and moving forward with renewed energy throughout each sickening song on Surpassing Carbon Decay. This is a demented experience to endure to be clear, though a few spins will certainly reveal more and more layers and intricate non-repeated details each time, subtly reflecting that this is not a haphazard nor sloppy creation of poorly designed speed-addled brutality like many of their peers.
Nails of Imposition often feels like two bands trying to one up the other while wrestling for dominant control, fought between a technical death metal band with strong brutal tendencies, and a primal brutal death group well versed in hyper-active shredding when the moment calls for it. It’s this very schizoid back and forth between supercharged technicality and absolutely murderous brutality and heft that keeps Surpassing Carbon Decay interesting all the way through.
If merciless brutal death metal wrapped in tech-death is for you, Nails of Imposition will all but surely impress the hell out of you. This is not a generic album anchored by forgettable and mindless riffs, Surpassing Carbon Decay is a masterclass in finely crafted grade-A riffing and shredding, supplemented by razor-sharp brutality, and fused to constant hyper-blasting spit out in unorthodox forms mutating from song to song.
