BLACK CILICE, MONOLORD Among The Top Tracks of the Week

monolord

Every Thursday, Gimme Radio Program Director, Brian Turner, delivers the top 5 jaw-dropping tracks on Gimme Radio.

Culled from the week’s past shows, these tracks have the Gimme Radio DJs' seal of approval, have the listeners demanding more and the Gimme office buzzing.

BLACK CILICE – Transfixion of Spirits

From the September 9th Iron Bonehead release Transfixion of Spirits. This mystery-shrouded Portuguese figure is oft discussed in reverence around Gimme DJ circles, west coasters especially are pretty excited for the NWN/IB show this fall in Oakland (Black Cilice's only US appearance). Harnessing the hiss/rawness of lo-fidelity and using it as a compositional cloak of disharmonic beauty, nth-gen black metal evolved into a higher, weirder place more people ought to be poking their heads into.

MONOLORD – Bastard Son

Epic raw riffery from this Swedish trio, hitting Europe on tour October, USA in November. Gravel guitar tones cut through cave-dweller vocals, some soaring melodic lines prevailing through the psychedelic sludge. This new Relapse period should get them to many more ears deservedly.

GATECREEPER – Boiled Over

Featuring sometime-Gimme-hosts Chase Mason and Nate Garrett, Arizona's Gatecreeper have seized on their momentum to come up with a crusher of an anthem to predate their October 4th Deserved release. They've described this track as capturing "the melodic side of Bolthrower with the crushing heaviness and groove of a band like Obituary or Crowbar."

WITCH VOMIT – Dripping Tombs

Finely structured and crisply executed death metal from Portland OR, the quartet of Filth, C.L., J.G., and Tempter thrust their LP Buried Deep in a Bottomless Grave via 20 Buck Spin August 30th. Blasted and blazing, riffs swell and recede throughout a continual gutteral rumble of bass and vox.

OLD – Die In Your Beauty Sleep

Only the festering toxicity of Bergenfield, New Jersey could create some musical alchemy like this: throttling electro-grind, smatterings of the industrial elements they'd dig deep into later. Old Lady Drivers were hilarious and deadly serious, combining the tortured vocals from Alan Dubin with the remixology of James Plotkin, two fellows who would go on to form Khanate with Stephen O'Malley and Blind Idiot Got drummer Tim Wyskida (Dubin fronts Gnaw nowadays, Plotkin is a producer-at-large and still creating sounds). Early second Nirvana guitarist Jason Everman came through this unit later on as well, but this first LP from 1988 illustrates their unique stamp on suburban sickness.
