Gimme Metal Program Director Brian Turner delivers the week's top 5 office buzz-worthy tracks.
GAEREA – Urge
Portugal's Gaerea sidestep a lot of preconceived black metal rules, making use of an unusually wide span of influences, emotions, and sound textures on their latest 'Limbo' (Season Of Mist). They're rife with pure fury, and as the video details, cloak themselves in as much mystery as clarity. We've not only got the band with a guest DJ special on February 1st (with giveaways throughout the show!), but Gimme TV (!) and Season of Mist are teaming up for our first ever live stream, Saturday, February 13th at 12pm PT/3pm ET! $10USD gets you into this streaming event and you can purchase your tickets today from the Gimme Metal app. Download or update to the latest version of app first.
MONOLORD – I'm Staying Home
It seems these Swedes have penned the Covid-era anthem of sorts, culled from a new two track single on Relapse. The sound is clear, see-sawing, titanic riffs lulling you into submission, melodic vocals continually on the cupse of being swallowed up in the void but still present and taking the lead at guiding you into a state of fuzzy hypnosis. Good holdover til the next full lengther.
PETRINE CROSS – Centuries of August
Severely dark black metal from the UK, it's lo-fi production status a badge on its sleeve using sonic vagueries to lure you into a questionable, unrecognizable chasm. As thundering drums and distortion-flecked riffs flicker like flame, the (non-linear) lines between instrumentation and vocals sonically blur into a splattered, organic mess that is raw, exhuding helplessness and total nihilism.
JARHEAD FERTILIZER – Silence the Narc
Prime death/grind from Maryland, with a new LP 'Product of My Environment' out on Closed Casket Activities at February's end. Serious sickness with a hint dose of swing/groove.
EKTOMORF – And the Dead Will Walk
These Hungarians have been around over a quarter of a century channeling classic thrash influences with a heady dose of Eastern European dourness. Their newest 'Reborn' arrives tomorrow on Napalm, and Gimme welcomes the band for a self-curated special of Eastern Euro/Slavic metal coming up on February 9th! In the meantime, Ektomorf's newest phase sounds pretty damn good.
