Gimme Radio Program Director, Brian Turner, delivers the top 5 jaw-dropping tracks on Gimme Radio.
YOTH IRIA – Sid Ed Djinn
For modern Greek black metal samplings, you could do a lot worse than the new Yoth Iria. Comprised of the duo of Mutilator (ex-Rotting Christ/Immortal) plus Pentagram Studios propriator George Emmanuel, Yoth Iria meld some seductive Middle Eastern mysticism into the dark proceedings. Their 'Under His Sway' EP hits in March on Repulsive Echo.
DRUGOTH – Of Doom Forseeable
Vocalist drummer Drugoth and guitarist Shograath serve up a festering pile of Australian crust of great noteworthiness. Imagine Cronos with Johnny Rotten's sneer steering a course through tumultuous tunnels of Tokien-inspired terror. They also split EP with Snorlax, who we reviewed last week.
KHOST – Buried Steel
Unfortunately just a teaser video here, but go to Bandcamp to hear two new streaming tracks from these Midland UK masters of industrial sickness. Khost are Andy Swan (Final) and Damian B (Techo Animal, Deathless) and recruit assist from Eugene Robinson (Oxbow), Stephen Mallinder (Cabaret Voltaire) and Daniel Buess of Swiss hate-jazz freaks 16-17 among others. Collapsing metal, dark sound design creeping out of nebulous riffage and echoplexed cries. Majestic and broken brutality.
IHSAHN – Stridig
In his solo life outside of his Emperor legacy, Ihsahn's really challenged convention with avant-forays, saxes, and a true ability to keep fans guessing, but this time crafts an EP dedicated to his home county Telemark with back-to-roots rawness and primitivism. Don't get too comfortable with that encapsulization, it's far from what you'd expect from early Emperor, it's got slow, dramatic passages, folk-heavy vibe at times, and there's a freakin' Lenny Kravitz cover on this thing (!), and Iron Maiden too. Powerful, sad, epic, and outside the parameters of what you expect from metal. We're excited to host Ihsahn for a guest DJ special on the EP's release date, February 14th!
IGORRR – Very Noise
I guess while this week's picks are strongly stretching the boundaries of what metal can be, here's the already-nuts-viral latest video from the twisted brainstem of Gautier Serre. Continued zero-attention-span switches between drum-and-bass mayhem, rubbery prog bass, baroque outburts and precision guitar riffology, "Very Noise"'s vidclip is a complete DMT nightmare to say the least!
