We recently interviewed one of metal's finest guitarists, Marty Friedman, as he is touring with Scale the Summit and The Fine Constant to support his recent release, Wall of Sound, his second solo album via Prosthetic Records. We discussed the Black Veil Brides and Shining's guest appearances on the LP, Metallica's new record, and his upcoming documentary.
In addition, we asked Marty about his dream tour and setlist, which you can check out below.
For starters what is a band you’ve previously toured with that you’d like to tour with again?
Oh Metallica, without question.
And on the contrary, who is a group you’d like to tour with that you have yet to share the stage with?
Oh wow, maybe Muse. There's so many bands that I like. I love Deafheaven and I love MONO. I have toured with Shining before, but they're high on the list too.
If you could only pick one song from each album you’ve released, which would you choose?
- Hawaii – The songs don't easily come to my head, but I do play a riff of a song called "One Nation Underground" mixed with "Hyper Doom."
- Cacophony’s Speed Metal Symphony – I'd play the title track off that one.
- Cacophony’s Go Off! – I'll probably play "Black Cat," that one is pretty cool.
- Dragon’s Kiss – "Forbidden City," we actually play a bit of that song in my set right now.
- Scenes – I'd do "Valley of Eternity," I've only done that live once.
- Introduction – "Bittersweet" for the same exact reason.
- True Obsessions – I've never played anything off of that live, but I guess "Espionage."
- Music for Speeding – I play lots off of that. I play "Ripped" off of that right now, so that would be the one I choose.
- Loudspeaker – I play a whole bunch of songs off of Loudspeaker now, so I guess "Devil Take Tomorrow" is one of my favorites.
- Tokyo Jukebox – I play lots off that one too, but I'd go with "Amagigoe."
- Bad DNA – Actually, haven't played much of that live, but we were just talking about adding "Battle Scars" from that record to our set now.
- Tokyo Jukebox 2 – Maybe the first song, "Yeah! Mechha Holiday."
- Metal Clone X – Maybe "Orange Note," that was a pretty good song.
- Inferno – We play a bunch of songs off that, so I'll say the title track.
- Wall of Sound – We're playing a bunch stuff off that too, but I'll go with "Whiteworm."
What countries would you hit on your dream tour?
I've played everywhere I want to play except for a couple countries. Egypt and India are the first places to come to mind that I really want to go to that I haven't performed at yet. I love playing in Italy, South America, so many places in Europe, and obviously in Japan and Asia. I get offers all the time for Egypt and India, but it just depends on them actually coming to fruition. Sometimes it doesn't always work out, but I hope to make it work out soon.
