DEVIN TOWNSEND Is Now Without A Label And Band, And He Loves It

"No label, band, management, anything. It could be a trip up my own ass, but I feel I’ve earned that trip. I think it’s going to be tremendous."

"No label, band, management, anything. It could be a trip up my own ass, but I feel I’ve earned that trip. I think it’s going to be tremendous."

In today's episode of "What The Hell Is Devin Townsend Doing," we've found out quite a few bits of information. We know Devin Townsend Project is currently on hiatus and all those dudes are off doing their own thing, but now via Instagram Townsend has revealed he doesn't have a specific band for his new stuff. He also says he's not on any label currently, which he wasn't before, but it was distributed through major labels. His specific sentiment on this is "No label, band, management, anything. It could be a trip up my own ass, but I feel I’ve earned that trip. I think it’s going to be tremendous."

He then elaborates on that sentiment, talking about how it's all a part of his artistic journey.

There’s certainly a value in having a team of people- friends and coworkers – help one be objective about their work. It especially seems to help commercially, but it also becomes a trajectory that is hard to step away from, a treadmill of sorts. I like the hang time so much that I find myself sliding into that role repeatedly until I realize there’s an undercurrent of dissatisfaction with my own identity within that role. Maybe not with the music, but with the process.

The idea of the process is to articulate your own trip accurately as it evolves and learn from your missteps. (The above included) I talk a lot of shit, and it’s doubtful that will ever change… but we know our paths subconsciously, so it’s about being creatively assertive enough to allow it to flourish. , it’s about following through and breaking through walls. And cats.

Townsend is currently in the studio working on 100 songs or so of varying genres, and we know he's also working on a live album/DVD. It's also probably worth noting that Townsend is still "signed" to HevyDevy records/imprint, considering it's his.
