How much money do bands really make at their live shows?

How much money do bands really make at their live shows?

It's been two months since we've checked in with Billboard's Box Score charts looking how much bands really make on shows. The first two times gave us an interesting look on how much gross revenue tour packages make.

Keep in mind these are gross profits, meaning this is before the venue takes a cut, promoters take a cut, manangers take a cut, production costs etc. This is just the total amount of money generated from ticket sales. The amount of money the bands actually take home is much less.

Artist: Black Sabbath, Uncle Acid & The Deadbeats
Venue: Phones 4u Arena Manchester, UK
Date: Dec. 18th, 2013
Gross Sales: $1,156,790
Attendance/Capacity: 13,717 / 14,825
Ticket Prices: $89.60, $65.16

Artist: Black Sabbath, Uncle Acid & The Deadbeats
Venue: O2 Arena – London, UK
Date: Dec. 10th, 2013
Gross Sales: $1,367,620
Attendance/Capacity: 16,441 / 17,022
Ticket Prices: $90.03, $73.66

If there was any doubt that the Black Sabbath reunion scores big money, your doubts have been qualmed. Keep in mind, since this was in UK, the amounts are theoretically a bit inflated due to the currency exchange. Still nothing to scoff at. Take a look at how these numbers compare to similar UK shows:

Artist: Avenged Sevenfold, Five Finger Death Punch, Avatar
Venue: Phones 4u Arena Manchester, UK
Date: Nov. 30th, 2013

Gross Sales: $491,524
Attendance/Capacity: 9,482 / 11,257
Ticket Prices: $52.34, $44.29

Of course, ticket prices were much lower, but Sabbath still sells tickets.

Artist: Bring Me The Horizon

Artist: All That Remains, Motionless In White, Emergent
Venue: Mill City Nights – Minneapolis, MN

Gross Sales: $4,318
Attendance/Capacity: 238 / 750
Ticket Prices: $20, $17, $8.50

I'm kind of shocked at how popular Bring Me The Horizon are, heavily outdrawing all the other bands that I assumed were on the same level as them. They crushed All That Remains and August Burns Red, and I thought August Burns Red were huge as well. Poor Finntroll can barely draw 300 people in Minneapolis. At the same time, it was probably freezing in November so it must be a hard sell.

Artist: Morbid Angel
Venue: Mill City Nights – Minneapolis, MN
Date: Nov. 18th, 2013
Gross Sales: $4,170
Attendance/Capacity: 194 / 729
Ticket Prices: $25, $20, $10

Artist: Monster Magnet, Royal Thunder, Zodiac
Venue: Mill City Nights – Minneapolis, MN
Date: Nov. 17th, 2013
Gross Sales: $3,706
Attendance/Capacity: 233 / 750
Ticket Prices: $19, $16, $8

Does Minneapolis just hate metal?

Artist: VolbeatIced EarthTeenage Bottlerocket
Venue: Hallenstadion – Zurich, SWI
Date: Nov. 14th, 2013
Gross Sales: $591,428
Attendance/Capacity: 8,485 / 13,000
Ticket Prices: $74.13

Wow, Volbeat are huge overseas!

Artist: Manowar
Venue: Regency Center Grand Ballroom – San Francisco, CA
Date: Feb. 20th, 2014
Gross Sales: $61,150
Attendance/Capacity: 801 / 1,424
Ticket Prices: $100, $75

Those Manowar ticket prices are insane, but prove that if you are a legacy act and build a dedicated following, they will pay any absurd amount to see you.

Artist: Aaron Lewis of (Staind)
Venue: Sound Board Theater at Motorcity Casino – Detroit, MI
Date: Feb. 06th, 2014
Gross Sales: $53,062
Attendance/Capacity: 1,434 / 1,520
Ticket Prices: $45, $36

Ugh!

Artist: Amon Amarth, Enslaved, Skeletonwitch
Venue: Regency Center Grand Ballroom – San Francisco, CA
Date: Feb. 14th, 2014
Gross Sales: $35,600
Attendance/Capacity: 1,424 / 1,424
Ticket Prices: $27, $25

No shock. This tour was hot and sold out in NYC as well. Amon Amarth need to write a book on how to properly get management and label support to take your band to the next level. They are delivering on all cylinders.

Artist: Children Of Bodom, Tyr, Death Angel
Venue: MacEwan Conference & Event Centre – Calgary, AB
Date: Feb. 23rd, 2014
Gross Sales: $30,719
Attendance/Capacity: 968 / 1,000
Ticket Prices: $39.12, $31.03

Children of Bodom surprisingly drew less of a crowd, although it was in a secondary market and Canada, so I guess relatively it's a success.

Artist: Zakk Wylde

Gross Sales: $18,279
Attendance/Capacity: 558 / 558
Ticket Prices: $32.76

Artist: In This Moment, Motionless In White, Kyng, All Hail The Yeti
Venue: Knitting Factory – Reno, NV
Date: Nov. 24th, 2013
Gross Sales: $14,058
Attendance/Capacity: 591 / 1,185
Ticket Prices: $38, $23

Artist: Suicidal Tendencies, Terror, Trash Talk, The Inspector Cluzo
Venue: Knitting Factory – Boise, ID
Date: Dec. 06th, 2013
Gross Sales: $9,290

And thus conludes another box score report. How much money did your band draw recently?
