Who drew more people/money: Slayer or Smashing Pumpkins & Marilyn Manson?

How much money does a band make on the road? Billboard hopes to answer that question, somewhat, by providing gross sale reports in their weekly Boxscore report. We like to check in every once in a while to see how metal bands are doing. Keep in mind, these are gross sales, meaning this is before the venue, promoter, etc. get the cut. This doesn't mean the band gets the entire piece of the pie and their profits vary based on the deals they make. Check out our previous Earnings & Attendance Reports.

It's been over a month since we've ran one of these, so let's start comparing some numbers…

Artist: Slayer
Venue: Huntington, NY – The Paramount
Date: Jun. 16th-17th, 2015
Gross Sales: $181,039
Attendance/Capacity: 3,146 / 3,146
Ticket Prices: $58

Slayer charge $60 for just them! Meanwhile, when Mayhem Fest charges half the price to see them a few weeks later with about 20 other bands, including King Diamond, they drew about  the exact same crowd.

Artist: The Smashing Pumpkins & Marilyn Manson
Venue: Las Vegas, NV – The Joint
Date: Jul. 10th, 2015
Gross Sales: $313,578
Attendance/Capacity: 4,136 / 4,136
Ticket Prices: $200, $135, $75, $59.50

An impressive sell out for two acts about 20 years past their prime.  It's crazy that these two bands outdraw Slayer, but then again, Slayer was never on the radio.

Melvins still deliver, while maintaining integrity.

I believe this is Ministry's 5th farewell tour. Those ticket prices are insane, and it's reflected in the poor turnout.

Gross Sales: $28,452

Between the Buried and Me outdrew Ministry but because of the lower ticket prices did not outsell the band.
