Frank's Favorite Records of 1987

Happy 2013 Metal Injection Junkies! 2012 proved to be a huge year for Metal Injection and even some of us personally, but in order to see any kind of growth, you sometimes have to look to the past to notice where you stand today.

Last year I created a retrospective series called On The Record that looked back on the changes in metal over the last 10 years. Now that we've celebrated the end of 2012 with our usual year-end round up lists, I thought it might be fun to step back even further in time and see just how far we've come in 25 years. In this post I'll be taking a look at the year 1987

Nineteen Hundred and Eighty Seven, was certainly a crazy year that was all over the map. Although the term "sub-genre" wasn't even a thought; we simply called it all Metal; looking back you can really see where the lines can be drawn by today's standards. While glam infused bands like Motley Crue, Bon Jovi, Def Leppard, and Guns N' Roses ruled the charts, something entirely different was brewing in the South East, United States. This was the year Florida death metal was put on the map with demo releases from bands like Deicide, Obituary, Morbid Angel, and the debut LP from Death titled Scream Bloody Gore.

Naturally the year was also filled with ups and downs. While Glenn Danzig found bigger success starting his solo career, shock rocker Dee Snider found himself at a complete loss following the disbandment of Twisted Sister. Carnivore released their final record to the world, while Testament released their debut The Legacy. Motley Crue bassist Nikki Sixx nearly dies from a drug overdose while MTV's Headbanger's Ball is born. Napalm Death released their legendary grind debut Scum, while actress Tawny Kitaen danced on the hood of a car leaving Whitesnake with a #1 hit single.

In the spirit of our year-end lists, here is a look at some of my favorite metal releases from 1987 in no particular order.
