Indianapolis post-black supergroup Chrome Waves is back after six years with a gorgeous cover of Slowdive's seminal 1993 classic "When the Sun Hits."
Bass-driven melodies, complete with gorgeous synths and clean vocals, make this an interesting choice for a band whose current and former members make up integral parts of Wolvhammer, Abigail Williams, Twilight, The Atlas Moth, Nachtmystium, The Gates of Slumber, etc.
Now condensed to a trio comprised of vocalist James Benson (Amiensus, Nòtt, Fail To Decay), guitarist/bassist Jeff Wilson (ex-Wolvhammer, ex-Abigail Williams) and drummer "Iron" Bob Fouts (ex-The Gates of Slumber), these Midwesterners are ramping things up with the announcement of their debut full-length, A Grief Observed, which is dropping on all formats March 1 via Disorder Recordings.
Former Gwar member Kim Dylla and Nihilterrmos guitarist Micah Leonetti (ex-Wolvhammer) also contributed session work to the cover, which helps the track further its ascension into non-metal territories.
"With a name like Chrome Waves," says Wilson, "the roots of this project are no doubt based in elements of the shoegaze genre as it's named after a Ride song. Ten years or so ago at our origin, this mixture wasn't as prevalent as it is today, so it seemed like something to experiment with way back when, if not just creatively, as a personal project of two genres that I was passionate about."
"Bands like Slowdive always went hand in hand emotionally with the early black metal that meant something to me as a teenager and into adulthood," he continues. "I'll still proclaim to this day, in an age when the most sensitive guys listen to the 'toughest' music, if you can't get the same feeling of the hair standing up on your arm from a song like 'Allison' or 'When the Sun Hits' that you can from any early Burzum or Emperor material, you're simply just wearing the costume."
"When The Sun Hits" is currently available at name-your-price on Bandcamp, as well as the other recently released single, "Burdened," which we premiered a few weeks back.
