According to the Pollstar Year End Top 200 North American Tours, Black Sabbath did really well with a combined total of selling 293,783 in the 21 cities they played in. The sales for the band netted them a cool $19.7 million overall and landed them 56th on the list, which is awesome Congratulations to them! Amazing that after all these years they can still draw an insane crowd and generally make a killing… oh who am I kidding, we're talking about the friggin' forefathers of metal here! Keep in mind the list isn't specific to genre- Black Sabbath placed 56th overall. Period.
While Black Sabbath did beat out some of their hard rock and metal peers Rush and Nine Inch Nails, they were simply no match for the mighty Rolling Stones who placed 4th and grossed an unreal $87.7 million with 383,926 ticket sales over the course of 18 shows. That means The Rolling Stones may or may not have been charging a people an arm and a leg for tickets ($228 per ticket on average as opposed to Black Sabbath's $67 average). Sure, the numerical differences in total gross is pretty vast, it's not indicative of popularity all too much.
Oh, and in case you were curious the number on spot belongs to Taylor Swift, who grossed $112.7 million with 1.33 million tickets over 66 shows. The average price for a ticket was $84. Holy shit.
