Corey Taylor Clarifies: New SLIPKNOT Album Is Parts Iowa & Vol. 3

The album has heavy parts and has melodic parts.

Everything Corey Taylor says comes back to haunt him. During a 2018 interview with Kerrang!, Taylor was asked about the sound of the new album, We Are Not Your Kind and at the time said it was "Iowa levels of heavy." He added that the new stuff makes ".5 [The Gray Chapter] look like nobody's business."

Now, it could be said that the first single the band released in October, "All Out Life" was certainly Iowa levels of heavy. But the band's most recent single, "Unsainted" certainly had more elements of later Slipknot (and some critics even pointed to shades of Corey's other band, Stone Sour) leading the Slipknot frontman to offer this clarifying statement:

Thanks to the millions of #maggots around the world. Spoiler: new album has Iowa moments. Also has Vol. 3 moments. But it overwhelmingly has WANYK [We Are Not Your Kind] moments. Everyone’s a critic, but I hope this clears up any misconceptions. Enjoy the next chapter- see you all soon! -CMFT

For the record, I love the new single. When I heard it, it just made sense to me as the lead single because this is a song that can easily be played on hard rock radio stations all over the country, a vital promotional tool for a band their size. I don't think it meant that the entire album was going to have these melodic clean singing parts. I'm sure the extra heavy stuff is deeper in the album, and less radio-friendly, which is why it wasn't the first single.

So to Slipknot fans that are a bit trepidatious, just be a little patient. The heavieness is coming! In the meantime, get hyped for their tour by watching the awesome footage of them performing on Jimmy Kimmel Live from a few days ago. Taylor also updated fans on how his knees felt, post-surgery, after the performance:
