Dave Mustaine Says METALLICA Is The Hold Out For More Big Four Shows, Suggests "Big Three" Shows As A Solution

Would a show of this caliber without Metallica even work?

Would a show of this caliber without Metallica even work?

Dave Mustaine really wants to go out and play a show with Slayer one more time before they call it quits. After Slayer rannounced their final North American tour, Mustaine expressed that he would love to do one more Big Four show for the fans.

Interestingly, in a new interview speaking to Eddie Trunk, Mustaine reveals that everybody is on board for the show except for Metallica:

“I think if you asked the three of us that, our camps would probably say yes. If Anthrax, Slayer and Megadeth all want to do it, and Metallica doesn’t, then what do we do? The Big Three? I’m sure that a lot of people would like to see that, and that may be what it is. You know, you may end up having it be the Big Three plus No. 5 if we have Exodus play with it.

But it’s not about just doing concerts for the sake of concerts. It was about the movement. It was about what we did together as a group.

Excluding Anthrax, we’re all like neighbors almost ’cause we all lived so close. It was just a half hour to an hour at at most between each other’s houses on the freeway. So, I think it would be great to do more Big Four stuff—do one in Japan. Do one in South America—we never did one in South America; we haven’t done one in Asia. Give the people an opportunity to see it before it goes away forever.”

The idea of doing a Big Three show seems like it's missing the most vital ingredient to make this show a success: Metallica. When I saw the Big Four play at Yankee stadium, I noted the abundance of Metallica shirts in the audience – it wasn't even close. It was 85% Metallica shirts, maybe 10% Slayer shirts and then the rest. Without Metallica, this show goes from a stadium to perhaps a 5,000 person arena. I can't see it working, but maybe I'm off. Vote in our poll, would you go see "The Big Three?"

It's interesting that Mustaine seems to be lobbying so hard for this, when all signs initially pointed to him being the reason the Big Four stopped doing shows years ago. Slayer frontman Tom Araya hinted "the politics of character in one particular band" were holding up more shows a few years ago, with many assuming it was Mustaine. Although at the time Mustaine denied he was the one holding them back, but rather he was not the one to ask.
