Dragonforce had previously stated that its new album Reaching Into Infinity would have "brutal vocals" on it, though that's a pretty subjective claim to make. Brutal like taxing yelling a la Whores? Brutal like Cannibal Corpse?
According to guitarist Herman Li via an interview with That Drummer Guy, it's definitely going to be the latter of the two. At least that's what we can gather from the band's frankly shocking announcement that it'll be covering Death's "Evil Dead" as a bonus track.
"Well, I guess we just wanted to do something different and unexpected. No one expected us to do a cover like that. Just like when we did the Johnny Cash cover on Maximum Overload, people were going, 'What the hell is that?' And, of course, we love Death — it's such an awesome, legendary band — so we thought we'd try and see if we can do it justice and give our own style to it. And at the same time, this opens… When you do something different that you haven't done before, you put new challenges and you kind of get better when you finish it. No one ever heard Marc sing that way before on previous albums, and it helps us grow and finetune our other techniques."
I'm curious to hear how this turns out. Plus, I say good on Dragonforce for trying to mix things up this far into its career. Though I wonder if they'll keep it to how Death performed the track, or throw in a little hyperactivity that Dragonforce is known for?
Reaching Into Infinity will be out May 19, and will be the group's seventh album, if you can believe that.
