Eddie Hermida's Vocals Replaced in Devil May Cry 5 Game, But SUICIDE SILENCE's Music Remains

An interesting solution to a unique problem.

An interesting solution to a unique problem.

A few months back, the video game Devil May Cry 5 announced that they collaborated with Suicide Silence on a new track called “Subhuman.” The track was co-written by the game's composer Cody Matthew Johnson and was the battle theme for the game’s protagonist, Dante.

Shortly after the track, and its accompanying music video, were announced  there was an outcry against featuring Suicide Silence vocalist Eddie Hermida in the game, when Hermida had been accused of sexual misconduct, for which he apologized for. The game makers were not aware of the indcident until that point and, the track was pulled, and the game makers were evaluating their options for a feasible solution. However, it seems another solution has been reached.

They replaced Hermida's vocals. Game Informer (by way of MetalSucks) reports that former Volumes frontman Michael Barr was brought in to re-record Hermida's vocals. All the parts by the remaining members of Suicide Silence remained in tact.

In a blog post earlier today, Capcom’s Yuri Araujo explained the decision:

“While the song was written and recorded in-game well before such allegations, we’d still like to ensure, to the best of our abilities, that your experience with the game ultimately goes unmarred. As such, our development team, producers, recording and mixing teams have worked hard to find and implement a new vocal track by Michael Barr.

“It is worth noting that the hard work of the Suicide Silence band members, as well as song writers Cody Matthew Johnson & Mark Heylmun, remained intact, as they were not involved with the incidents. As you hear the new track in new promotional materials and in-game, please expect the instrumental parts to sound the same as before. In-game credits have also been updated to properly reflect the new recording.”

Game Informer speculated that the instrumental version of the song was probably far more interwoven into the gameplay that just the vocals, which would've been easier to replace.

Suicide Silence have not been active since a summer tour, which guitarist Mark Heylum sat out of. Meanwhile, drummer Alex Lopez launched a hardcore punk band a few months back.
