Last week, Dave Grohl revealed in an interview just how much he typically drinks before a show and it's basically more than most people drink in a month. It basically consists of at least five shots of Jager, a bunch of Coors Light and three Advils.
Mike Schwartz, who fancies himself a “Musician Wellness Expert” (what a gig!) has penned an essay expressing concern for Grohl and his behavior.
He claims that Grohl's admission in a recent interview was "a cry for help" and that “my professional opinion is that Dave is dealing with a lot of pain.”
Have you seen Dave Grohl? It's hard to find a photo of him where he's not smiling, so I am not sure how much pain he might be in – although, we don't know what goes on in his head when he's not on stage.
“Last week we were graced with Mr. Foo Fighter’s insight on how to succeed in the music industry. Ironically enough, I was speaking on the topic of Mental Health and Wellness in the Music Industry at the Folk Music Ontario Conferences in Mississauga, Ontario. I opened up my email and found an article in Alan Cross’ Newsletter that left me feeling sick to my stomach. On a recent radio interview for 95.5 KLOS, Dave gave us the dirt on his pre-show ritual with the Foos, but if you’re paying attention and reading between the lines, what we really got was a cry for help. My professional opinion is that Dave is dealing with a lot of pain. If you haven’t seen the video yet, the three minutes will blow you away. I read the transcript last week and I couldn’t believe it. I had to dive in deeper to see the interview for myself. What I watched was …well… really disappointing.”
Schwartz went on to write the various dangers of Dave Grohl's behavior. He noted that mixing booze and Advil can increase your likelihood of death by causing amplified gastro-intestinal or stomach bleeding. He noted that alcohol dehydrates you and can lead to loss of voice. Grohl's drinking can affect others via his peer pressure, and he's afraid Grohl's career, overall, would be derailed.
While these are all reasonable concerns, it does seem that Grohl has had a handle on things for over 20 years now, so perhaps he is an outlier?
Or maybe Grohl will see this and think about reevaluating his pre-show ritual.
