Rush sadly ended with the death of legendary drummer Neil Peart in 2020, though they played their final show long before that in 2015.
Then in 2022, Rush frontman Geddy Lee and guitarist Alex Lifeson took the stage at the South Park 25th anniversary show to play "Closer To The Heart". The duo returned once more that same year at both Taylor Hawkins tribute shows to play Rush classics alongside fellow drum legends Omar Hakim and Dave Grohl of Foo Fighters, Danny Carey of Tool, and Chad Smith of Red Hot Chili Peppers.
Which of course begs the question – would Lee and Lifeson ever get back out there as Rush with someone else behind the kit? In an interview with The Washington Post, Lee said he and Lifeson have warmed up to the idea over the past few years.
"It had been a taboo subject, and playing those songs again with a third person was the elephant in the room, and that kind of disappeared," Lee said. "It was nice to know that if we decide to go out, Alex and I, whether we went out as part of a new thing, or whether we just wanted to go out and play Rush as Rush, we could do that now."
Lee then reveals that he and Lifeson got together in October 2022 to jam, the first time in years they'd done so. As for potential Rush shows as Rush, Lee said first and foremost Lifeson needs to feel well enough to do so after undergoing surgery for stomach problems in July.
"He needs to feel good and feel healthy and strong," Lee says. "And then maybe we have a discussion."
