Kirk Hammett Says His Lack of Contributions on New METALLICA Album Was A "Very Bitter Pill To Swallow"

Metallica's long awaited new album Hardwired To Self Destruct will be out this Friday, and you won't be hearing much in the way of Kirk Hammett riffs throughout its 70+ minute runtime.

In an interview with Metal Hammer, Hammett says the loss of his phone containing over 250 new riffs really set him back in the creative process. He says he found his lessened input a "very bitter pill to swallow," though he does hope that another new record will surface before another eight years have passed.

"For me, being in this band, I always want to contribute. I always have a lot of musical concepts and ideas to bring to the table. Obviously, that was not meant to be this time, and I had to accept that fact. So I focused on my solos, just making sure that my playing on the album was at its best – at its full potential. Hopefully I can bring my ideas to the next Metallica album. I just hope it’s not another eight years."

Bassist Robert Trujillo added in the same interview that the new record was mainly Lars and James, and that he's "happy to support whatever we need to do." it doesn't sound like this is much in the way of strife, so much as it is disappointment and frustration. Maybe Trujillo and Hammett have enough new ideas packed away that they'll get to work on some new stuff soon?

Metallica's Hardwired…To Self-Destruct comes out this Friday, November 18th. Pick up the CD on Amazon for $9.99.
