Alice In Chains have been out promoting their new album, Ranier Fog and one of the cool events around the promotion of the album was a pop-up in Seattle with merch and rare items from the band's history.
A fan happened to notice that late frontman Layne Staley's father, Phil, was attending the pop-up as well and asked Phil his opinion on the band's current vocalist. (Skip to 23:00)

While ultimately saying that DuVall had big shoes to fill, he gave his metaphorical thumbs up to the band saying he's done a "terrific job." “I’m pretty biased. As far as I'm concerned, there isn't anybody that's going to match him, but the group has done a wonderful job.”
“William has done a wonderful job and I couldn't be prouder that the group is still carrying on. I love all those guys, love them. I still run texts with Jerry [Cantrell] and Sean [Kinney] on the road, so we’ve been close. We are family."
It's great to hear the Alice In Chains guys still keep in touch with Layne's family. When asked if parents should encourage their kids to be musicians, Phil says “Go for it, ‘cause I wanna be a groupie.”
