I guess Fred Durst in the late 90s and early 2000s had a pretty big ego. His band was selling millions of records and he was namedĀ Senior Vice President of A&R at Interscope in 1999. Durst was looking to sign the next hot nu-metal act. Eventually, he found Staind, which was a big success, but there was another band he was betting on that ended up giving him the cold shoulder.
That band was Taproot. Actually, Taproot sent Durst a demo and Durst was working on signing them. I guess the negotiations took too long and the band weren't feeling it and they eventually signed with Atlantic Records. The rumor was that System of A Down helped facilitate the Atlantic deal and because Durst was so mad, he got SOAD kicked off the Family Values tour in 1999. Durst also left a very angry voicemail to a member of Taproot's cellphone. Said cellphone voicemail surfaced not too long ago:
