Well, on two maps at least. The first map is a map of the most successful act that goes state by state. The map was compiled by a Reddit user and cross-references RIAA's list of the 250 top-most selling musicians nationwide. Here's the map:
I guess nothing important has ever come out of places like Idaho and Oregon? Hey, if you're from there and you've got a band now is your chance to matter! I think. Anyway, most of the map isn't metal, but lo and behold the Metallica as the best-selling artists out of California!
