Suicide and mental illness has been a hot topic in the rock and metal world in 2017, and World Suicide Prevention Day, Sunday, September 10, that very same world will be speaking out. A two-hour on-air special titled I'm Listening will begin at 10AM Eastern Standard Time across all Entercom radio stations, and will feature PSAs, promos, and live conversations running on host Entercom's website starting on September 5.
The September 10 special will feature personal stories and resources for listeners, should they choose to call in. Among the personalities to appear on the special are Metallica, Krist Novoselic of Nirvana, William DuVall of Alice In Chains, David Draiman of Disturbed, and Justin Furstenfeld of Blue October.
"No matter who you are, you have a powerful role to play in preventing suicide," said Dr. Christine Moutier, American Foundation for Suicide Prevention chief medical officer. "We're at a point in time where so many people, including celebrities and musicians, have opened up about their experience with mental health or their loss to suicide. That brave act of opening up about mental health challenges has helped to shape the culture. Now it's time to deepen our knowledge and learn what to do if you're concerned about yourself or a loved one. The ability each of us has to make people in our lives feel valued can't be underestimated."
