MESHUGGAH's TOMAS HAAKE Talks About What He Listens To Outside The Band

The man likes a throwback.

Tomas Haake

Legendary Meshuggah drummer Tomas Haake recently sat down with Metal Injection to talk about the band's upcoming record Immutable, drumming, and his health condition. At the end of the interview, Haake discusses his love of '80s music when asked if he has any cheesy "McDonalds"-type guilty pleasures he listens to outside the band.

"I don't know if I have McDonalds exactly, but it would just be like very different from what we do. Like, I tend to kind of go back in time when I listen to music… In the last 10 years I have a totally new appreciation for the '80s. If you had asked me that when I was 30 years old, [I would have said] '80s? That sucks except for some Metallica albums and some Slayer, or whatever.'

"But no, it's like the cheesy music of that era. That could be anything from you know… Depeche Mode to Tears For Fears or Duran Duran. I love that kind of stuff. I don't have the albums and I wouldn't say it's my 'go to' play, but I do play that kind of station in my car all the time."

Haake also reveals his love of Abba, which shouldn't be shocking – dude is Swedish and that's basically the law over there.

"I love that too, man. I'm Swedish. We grew up with that, so Abba has a very dear place in my heart for sure. Absolutely. I wasn't super stoked about [their first new record in 40 years Voyage], but I think it's kind of fascinating that they actually did it and made a new album. They're up there now. But the old albums, holy shit man."
