I knew all those bong rips were for something. A new study shows that cannabis can help reduce the threat of COVID-19. While researchers still search for a cure or vaccine, it seems like the greens can help ward off the 'rona.
Preprints published an online study looking at 400 different strains of both THC and CBD dominant strains and there are some very interesting preliminary results.
Researchers at the University of Lethbridge found that 13 strains, particularly sativas with high CBD, are able to down-regulate the protein reception ACE2, which is what coronavirus targets in the mouth, lungs and gastrointestinal tract. Basically, some weed strains target the same receptors as the virus, thus leading the scientists to hypothesizes that consuming them might reduce your chances of contracting the virus big a significant amount.
The study determined some strains are able to reduce virus receptor activity by as much as 73% percent.
It should be noted the process has not been peer reviewed, so the results have yet to be truly validated. Also, this has yet to be tested on humans. The scientists came to the determination using 3D models that mimmic the parts of the body impacted by the virus. Once testing with human bodies, the results may differ greatly.
Researchers say that if proven to be effective, using a spray containing the cannabis may be a way to ward off the virus until a vaccine is developed.
“The extracts of our most successful and novel high CBD C sativa lines, pending further investigation, may become a useful and safe addition to the treatment of COVID-19 as an adjunct therapy,” said the study’s lead researcher, Dr. Igor Kovalchuk. “Given the current dire and rapidly evolving epidemiological situation, every possible therapeutic opportunity and avenue must be considered.”
So keep your fingers crossed and those bongs packed!
