METALLICA Loses Lawsuit Against Insurance Company Over Cancelled Shows

Lloyd's Of London doesn't owe Metallica anything.

A California judge has ruled that Metallica's insurance company Lloyd's Of London doesn't need to compensate them for financial losses after six South American shows were cancelled in April 2020.

According to the decision handed down by Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Holly J. Fujie and obtained by Billboard, "The travel restrictions which caused the concert cancellations were a direct response to the burgeoning COVID-19 pandemic. The evidence… demonstrates that the COVID-19 pandemic spurred the travel restrictions to South America and restrictions on public gatherings. The COVID-19 pandemic was therefore the efficient proximate cause of the concerts' cancellations."

According to Metallica's original lawsuit filed in the Los Angeles Superior Court, the band's "cancellation, abandonment and non-appearance insurance" was denied. The denial stems from Lloyd's citation of the policy's communicable disease exclusion, which Metallica said is "an unreasonably restrictive interpretation of the policy" and is being called a breach of contract.

Metallica will release 72 Seasons on April 14. The album is 12 tracks and 77-minutes (so no more double albums from Metallica at the moment), and is available for pre-order here. Metallica will also hit the road throughout 2023 and 2024 at one of the many dates below.
