Everything Morbid Angel released between 1989 and 2003 in terms of full-length albums was varying degrees of awesome, and all of it was very death metal. Then the band took some time off releasing new material between 2003 and 2011, and returned to the world with the much-hated Illud Divinum Insanus. The lineup for the album was the ever-present Trey Azagthoth on guitar, guitarist Thor "Destructhor" Myhren, bassist and vocalist David Vincent, and drummer Tim Yeung, and was very industrial and not at all what Morbid Angel was or is. It was… well, bad.
Now Azagthoth has addressed the album in an interview with Guitar World, calling it a "confused effort." Azagthoth further says he knew the album wasn't going to be up to par with the band's previous material even as they were rehearsing before hitting the studio. Oh, and he slams the song "Radikult" in particular by saying he just tried to ignore its existence and asserts "I had nothing to do with that thing."
"It just shows how David and I are in different worlds these days. He is, for sure, an artist and great in his own way, but was becoming so very different than what I was into. It was a confused effort and that is why I changed the lineup."
"I already knew the result was gonna be off during rehearsals and recording. Some of it turned out cool, but David made his vocals too loud — like usual — and the rhythm guitars got subdued in the mix. Then David flew to L.A. to finish some vocals with the engineer that mixed the record. And it seems he influenced how the mix was gonna turn out. Before I heard the final mixes for the record I thought it was gonna sound a lot more heavy. But nothing could save a silly song like 'Radikult', which I just tried to ignore. I had nothing to do with that thing."
We wish we could forget that album too, Trey. Hey, let's all listen to "Radikult" anyway!
