OPETH Is Making Strides Toward Writing New Record

Well then! Opeth are apparently making some big strides toward writing their next record, and Mikael even makes some references to their super early work. What does it all mean?!

In an interview by Brutaltopia, and transcribed by good ol' Blabbermouth, Mikael said:

I've been working a little bit in between tours, which I don't necessarily do. I usually have a completely clean slate, like a clean calendar, before I really into the songwriting. But I have made some good progress.

And:

I was just lumping riffs on top of each other, arrangements, and it's all over the place. I've kind of outgrown that style of writing, because that's the way I used to write on the first, say, two records. And I was like, I have to stop myself here and arrange this a little bit. But then I was, like, 'Why?' OK, I'm just gonna let this song be the schizophrenic, kind of, it-doesn't-make-much-sense-but-I-kind-of-like-it-type song. So it's really long.

He also mentioned that there's between 25 and 30 minutes worth of music between the three songs, so prepare yourself for apparently a pretty long album. It'll be interesting to see what constitutes "schizophrenic" in Mikael's mind as well, given the fact that despite my love for all the band's material, I've definitely found some of it to be a little spazzy. Throw that in with the fact that he even references the band's early work in conjunction with what appars to be their new sound and it'll be…. well, it'll be something. At the very least, the man is obviously inspired to do some work given his breaking of the norm for writing, which can only be good. Right? RIGHT?!
