Yesterday, MetalSucks was completely run by reader Derek/Godless Angel, who did one hell of a job keeping things interesting with a whole slew of awesome reviews! One that caught my eye in particular was with Possessed frontman Jeff Becerra. Becerra is currently the only founding member of Possessed left and the only member still in the group to have ever performed on recorded Possessed material!
If you're not familiar, Possessed released the seminal Seven Churches in 1985, followed it up with Beyond the Gates in 1986, followed that up with The Eyes of Horror EP in 1987 and then never did anything ever again. Now 30 years later after Seven Churches and 28 years without a lick of new material, Becerra says the group will be writing some new jams toward the end of this year!
…well, you have to know Possessed to understand that while we are trying to do the whole “album” thing we decided to take some much needed vacation time first. Our break/vacation will end around August of this year and we will then start again in earnest writing the new material.
In another recent interview with Viktoras Blogas, Becerra describes what the new material might sound like and what it definitely will not sound like.
To be honest I never have tried to stick to a certain "style" but simply like to write and play what I think sounds good. But for sure we will stay heavy and evil. Possessed will never sell out and will stay heavy always.
He also touches on how the group would proceed with the new material, if things do end up coming to fruition.
We went through a series of member changes and are finally settling into our own again. Nothing in particular is holding us back. We are still shopping around looking for a label that is willing to sign us and finance us. Also we are considering simply doing our new material independently and on our own. But we have a lot of new material and are just working on getting it all together still.
Of all the groups to get together and write a new record, Possessed has a pretty high mark to hit. The group hasn't released much ever, but everything it has released is highly regarded by fans of the genre. So we'll see what happens in 2016!
